Almost every woman I photograph tells me some version of this before her maternity session.
“I’m awkward in photos.”
“I don’t know how to pose.”
“I’m not photogenic.”
“I feel uncomfortable in front of the camera.”
And honestly? Most women are far more nervous than they look.
Pregnancy already changes so much emotionally and physically. Add being photographed on top of that, and it makes sense why so many mothers feel anxious before booking a maternity session.
But here’s what I want you to know:
You do not need to feel perfectly confident before showing up.
You do not need modeling experience.
You do not need to know your angles.
And you definitely do not need to know what to do with your hands.
That is my job.
As a Scottsdale maternity photographer, one of the biggest transformations I see during sessions has nothing to do with posing.
It’s watching women slowly relax into themselves.

One of the biggest misconceptions about maternity photography is that the women in portfolios must naturally feel confident in front of the camera.
Most do not.
The difference is guidance.
Beautiful maternity portraits are not created because someone already knows how to pose. They are created through:
The experience itself is often what creates the confidence.
This is something I remind clients constantly during sessions.
You are not expected to arrive knowing what to do.
Throughout the session, I guide:
Sometimes the smallest adjustments completely change how an image feels.
A slight shoulder turn.
Relaxing the hands.
Slowing down movement.
Softening posture.
These little details make a huge difference.
And honestly, the best photographs usually happen once women stop trying to “look good” and simply settle into the experience.

This is probably the most common fear I hear.
Many women wait to feel:
But confidence usually comes during the experience, not before it.
My goal is never to force perfection.
It is to create an environment where you feel:
Because these photographs are not about becoming someone else.
They are about remembering yourself during this chapter too.

A few things make a huge difference:
The experience matters just as much as the final images.
That’s why I intentionally guide clients through every part of the process instead of expecting them to “perform” in front of the camera.
Pregnancy moves quickly.
And many mothers spend so much time focusing on how uncomfortable they feel that they forget they deserve to exist in these memories too.
Years from now, your children will not care whether you felt awkward in front of the camera for the first ten minutes of the session.
They will simply see you.
These photographs are not about perfection.
They are about:
You deserve to be part of these memories too.

No. Every session is fully guided from beginning to end.
Most women do. The experience is designed to help you feel relaxed, comfortable, and supported throughout the session.
Soft fabrics, fitted gowns, draping materials, and neutral tones photograph beautifully. You can also read my What To Wear For Maternity Photos guide.
Most maternity sessions are photographed between 28–34 weeks. I also shared more about timing in this maternity planning guide.
Yes. Clients receive guidance on wardrobe, styling, and preparation before their session.
My goal is to create an experience where you feel calm, guided, beautiful, and deeply seen.
