Almost every mother I photograph tells me some version of this before her maternity session.
“I’m awkward in photos.”
“I don’t know how to pose.”
“I don’t think I’ll photograph well right now.”
And honestly, curvier mothers often carry even more pressure around being photographed while pregnant.
But maternity portraits are not about shrinking yourself. They are not about looking like someone else online. And they are definitely not about needing to feel perfectly confident before you show up.
They are about preserving this chapter in a way that feels beautiful, emotional and true to you.
My job is not to expect you to know how to pose or magically feel comfortable in front of the camera overnight. My job is to guide you through every part of the experience so you feel calm, supported, and deeply seen.
As a Scottsdale maternity photographer, one of the biggest transformations I see during sessions has nothing to do with posing. It’s confidence.

Absolutely.
Beautiful maternity portraits are not about body size. They are about:
Most women you see in maternity portfolios are not professional models. They are real mothers who simply trusted the process.
One of the most rewarding parts of my job is watching women walk into the studio nervous and leave saying:
“I didn’t think I could look like that.”
The truth is, intentional direction changes everything.
The biggest difference is guidance.
During your session, I direct:
Small adjustments create huge differences in how images feel.
Soft lighting, thoughtful posing, flowing fabrics, and emotional connection matter far more than body size ever will.
Most women do not realize how much professional direction shapes the final image.
You are not expected to know what to do with your hands. You are not expected to know your angles. You are not expected to perform.
That is my job.

The right wardrobe can completely change how comfortable and confident you feel during your session.
Some of my favorite options for curvier mothers include:
The goal is not hiding your body.
The goal is creating shape, softness, movement, and emotion in a beautiful way.
Before every session, I help guide clients through styling so nothing feels overwhelming or stressful.
This is one of the biggest fears women have before booking maternity photos.
You are not supposed to know how to do this.
Throughout the session, I guide:
The best images often happen once women stop trying to “look good” and simply relax into the experience.
Confidence usually comes during the session, not before it.

Pregnancy changes women emotionally long before it changes everything else.
And many mothers spend so much time worrying about how they look that they forget they deserve to exist in these memories too.
These photographs are not about perfection.
They are about remembering:
You do not need to change yourself to deserve beautiful photographs.
The best time for maternity photos is usually between 28–34 weeks when the bump is beautifully visible while you are still comfortable enough to move naturally.
Neutrals, black, creams, earth tones, and monochromatic styling photograph beautifully because they create softness and shape without distraction.
Yes. Every maternity session is fully guided from beginning to end.
Yes. Clients have access to select wardrobe pieces and styling guidance before their session.
I photograph maternity sessions in Scottsdale and throughout the greater Phoenix area.
If you have been nervous about booking maternity photos because of how you might look in front of the camera, you are not alone.
My goal is to create an experience where you feel calm, beautiful, guided, and deeply seen.
Because these photographs are not about becoming someone else.
They are about remembering yourself in this chapter too.
